From my watercolor sketchbook

I've just begun to sketch in the watercolor moleskine I bought several months ago. I first had to start out by doing a most hideous sketch (not on purpose, and no, I'm not going to post it). Once I got that out of my system and "ruined" my sketchbook I'm free to move on and not worry about trying to be perfect. This of course results in somewhat better work. So here are grapefruit again, this time in my red bowl for EDM challenge 111. The outstanding characteristic of the bowl is its deep red glaze. I love red, and I love this bowl for its redness.

I've also done a sketch of a banana, which just happens to be EDM challenge 24. First I took a bite, then I sketched, then I ate the rest. Hmmm. Sort of a deja vu experience. I seem to have a theme going. Is this turning into a food blog?

Beautiful fruit bowl! And the banana is nice with such challenging and realistic shading. Both are really good drawings. I also know what you mean about starting a new sketchbook. I did the same thing today and didn't want to ruin the first page...but I kinda did.

Your bowl is absolutely spectacular - I also love red and LOVE the ceramic surface that you achieved. Great pages for your new Moleskine!

These are great paintings. I also love the color red because it is just so rich.

That red is really fabulous! Your blog makes me hungry though. I just bought my first Moleskine and now I know how to christen it! Great work Joanne!

These sketches are just gorgeous - I love the depth you got on the bowl and shadowing - I have a WC moleskine and will have to start using it - I need Whites!!

Beautiful colour, light and form in this watercolour, Joanne. I know what you mean about new Moleskines - I'm less inhibited about my watercolour one because it has perforated pages one can remove - It's the sketchbook I am inhibited about - one bad drawing and I'm shattered. What a dill I am!:)

These are both great but I'm totally in love with the banana. It's one of the brightest yummiest I've ever seen and so lifelike too. I loved your story about preparing the sketchbook by making a bad first sketch. It's inevitable, I've found, but so good to just move on from there--kind of like getting a new car and getting that first scratch or dent. Then you don't have to worry anymore.

Tee hee. This post made me laugh because when I got my little watercolor moleskine I was a little horrified of trying to draw in it. I ended up just doing a bunch of mixes which, like you, I never posted to my site. Once that first page is done it's so much easier isn't it?
